Society of Extension Education GujaratAbstract: Rural youth participation is essential for sustaining agriculture, but its measurement often remains descriptive and non-standardized. The present study was conducted to develop and validate a multidimensional scale for measuring rural youth participation in agriculture in Suryapet district of Telangana. An initial pool of 52 statements was prepared through literature review, expert consultation and field observation. After editing and expert relevancy testing, 33 statements were retained under three dimensions, namely participation in benefits, participation in implementation and participation in decision-making. The retained statements were subjected to item analysis using responses from 40 rural youth from a non-sample area. Statements with satisfactory discriminating power were included in the final scale. The scale was administered to 120 rural youth respondents selected from four villages of Huzurnagar and Matampally mandals. The final scale showed high internal consistency with a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.88. The Extent of Participation Index revealed that 72.50 per cent of respondents had medium participation, followed by low participation (16.67%) and high participation (10.83%). Dimensionwise analysis showed that participation in implementation ranked first, followed by participation in benefits and participation in decision-making. The developed scale may be useful for researchers, extension personnel and policy planners to assess rural youth participation in agriculture in a systematic manner.
